MDOT opens contractor
bids; contractors visit the future
bridge site
June 26, 2001 – The
Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) opened
bids for what is officially known as Federal Aid Project
BRDP-9205-00(003)/100332, “Construction of the main span
of the new Mississippi River Bridge on US Highway 82 between
Washington County, Mississippi and Chicot County, Arkansas.”
As part of the bidding
process, contractors visited the future bridge
site in May of 2001.
The opening of sealed bids is the culmination
of a two month bidding process, which included two meetings
with contractors and an official visit to the future bridge
site on Thursday, May 17, 2001 (pictured).
The choice of contractors will also determine the final
specifications of the bridge. Two sets of plans were prepared
when the bridge was designed, one for an all-concrete
bridge, the other for a concrete bridge with steel deck
members. Contractors will bid on the design they feel
is the most economical, and MDOT will choose a contractor
based on the lowest offered bid price for construction.
MDOT will review contractor bids to ensure all qualifications
are met and will announce the low bidder later in the
week. A more detailed review of bids will follow, and
MDOT will select a contractor for the bridge. This final
selection will likely be announced in late July of 2001.
