April 2006: Preparation for Main Span Closure
April 11, 2006 – The bridge superstructure is complete from bank to bank across the Mississippi River, with the exception of a 10-foot gap in the middle of the main span.
April 11, 2006 – The gap in the main span. During main span closure, the edge girders on either side of the superstructure will be connected with a final section. A single floor beam will be installed between the edge girders, and four prefabricated concrete panels will be placed on top.
April 11, 2006 – Superstructure extending from piers 37 and 38 are within feet of joining in the middle of the main span. During main span closure, any remaining elevation difference between the unconnected ends of the main span will be managed by moving cranes parked on the roadway deck.
April 11, 2006 – Work in progress on the Mississippi approach to the bridge.
April 13, 2006 – VIP’s ascend the stairs at Pier 36 on the way to the official Main Span Closure ceremony.

April 13, 2006 – Senator Trent Lott, Mississippi Central District Commissioner Dick Hall and Arkansas Highway Commissioner Mary P. “Prissy” Hickerson stand on a temporary access walkway between the main span superstructures.
April 18, 2006 – Two edge girder sections that will be used to close the main span have been hoisted onto the bridge deck in preparation for installation.
April 18, 2006 – Steel “webs” on the upstream side are splayed to receive the final edge girder sections.
April 18, 2006 – Workers take measurements between the two superstructures, which are some 20 feet (6 meters) apart.
