Public Invited to
Bridge Groundbreaking, Friday, November 2
October 25, 2001 –
In September of 1940, more than five thousand citizens
of Greenville-Lake Village gathered to dedicate their
first US 82 Mississippi River Bridge. On Friday, November
2, 2001, people from both sides of the river will join
again for the official groundbreaking of the 2005 bridge.
Officials from MDOT
choose the location for the bridge groundbreaking.

The ceremonies, set to begin at
2 p.m., will be held on the west bank of the Mississippi
River just south of the existing bridge. A map showing
the location is included in the official
invitation.
The program will include:
- Comments by local and
state officials from Mississippi and Arkansas.
- Presentation of colors by members of
the Mississippi Army National Guard and the Eudora,
Arkansas High School ROTC
- Pledge of Allegiance by Hezekiah Brown,
Chairman of the Washington County, Mississippi Economic
Development Commission
- Invocation by Pete Roncali, Chairman
of the Greeenville Area Chamber of Commerce Transportation
Committee
- The National Anthem sung by Guy Hovis,
from U.S. Senator Trent Lott’s office
- Benediction by Reverend Richard Sommers,
pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Greenville.

In July of 2001, the contract for construction
of the main cable-stayed span was awarded to Massman
Construction Co., of Kansas City, Mo., and Traylor Brothers
Inc., AJV, of Evansville, Ind., with the low bid of
$110,826,530. Massman was also the contractor for the
1940 Greenville bridge. |
