June 2005: Construction begins in a horizontal direction with pier table installation at Pier 37
The first pier table component, an edge girder, is hoisted into place on the north side of Pier 37.
Workers guide the first edge girder into position.

During initial installation of the pier table, workers secure an edge girder to temporary supports. Shock-absorbing “lock-up” devices, designed to mitigate seismic movement, will eventually be installed in this location.

The first precast concrete panels are placed on the pier table frame. The panels are made continuous by filling the space in between with concrete, which locks the enmeshed steel reinforcing (seen in the inset) together. Steel bars are then run through the panels from end to end and post-tensioned.
Engineers from MDOT and HNTB stand atop the concrete panels at Pier 37.
Resident engineer Gowen Dishman of HNTB snaps a photo from the passenger seat during a flyover of the bridge site by ultralights.
